Maputo, Mozambique, 2 Feb – The Water Supply and Assets Investment Fund (FIPAG) plans to finish within two years work on expanding greater Maputo’s public water distribution network by more than 500 kilometres, the Maputo-based newspaper Noticias has reported.
Cited by the daily, FIPAG president Nelson Beete said work would begin this year, and that besides the 500 kilometres of distribution network, new distributing centres should also be set up in Boane, Belo Horizonte, Catembe and Tsalala.
“We’ll soon get started with the investment to double production capacity and build new distribution centres. There are indeed many areas of Maputo where water doesn’t arrive, so we’ll be very satisfied when the project is finished in the next two years,” Beete said.
As part of the process to rework the urban water supply network, nearly US$500 million has been invested in the last ten years, the FIPAG president said.
“With the entry of private operators we want to capitalize earnings from the last ten years and every effort will be made to ensure that the reform provides better service,” he said.
FIPAG has been making major investments in the city of Maputo, which should enable water to reach 200,000 more people.
Meanwhile, FIPAG recently launched two international public tenders in the scope of the water supply project for the city of Maputo, involving recovery and strengthening of the distribution network in the districts of Chamanculo and Benfica.
The Mozambican government received financing for that purpose in 2008 from the European Investment Bank, European Commission, French Development Agency and the government of the Netherlands.
In mid-2009 FIPAG launched an international public tender for implementation of the water supply project for Maputo province, on which work began last December. (macauhub)
