Brussels authorises Angola’s flagship airline to increase number of planes flying to Portugal   [ 2009-11-30 ]

Brussels, Belgium, 30 Nov – The European Commission Friday authorised Angolan airline Taag to increase the number of aircraft used on its flights to Portugal, the authorities in Brussels announced.

The Commission , which Friday updated its blacklist of companies banned from flying in European air space, kept Taag on the list of companies with restrictions and certain conditions, but allowed the use of more aircraft given the progress made by the airline.

In a statement, the commission said it recognised “the great efforts made by the Angolan civil aviation authority and by air carrier Taag – Linhas Aéreas de Angola to progressively solve safety problems,” and thus the airline is “authorised to increase the number of aircraft used in its flight operation to Portugal.”

The European Commission decided last June to lift the ban on Taag flying in European air space, authorising to re-launch flights to Portugal, “only with certain aircraft and according to very strict conditions.”

European Transport Commissioner, António Tajani noted at the time that Taag remained on the European Union (EU) "black list" but was authorised to carry out 10 flights per week to Lisbon, which is the same as it carried out before the ban was put in place. (macauhub)
