Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 29 Aug – Brazilian state oil company Petrobras said Tuesday it plans to begin large-scale production of ethanol from cellulose between 2015 and 2020.
Gilberto de Carvalho, director of new projects at Petrobras, said that the first factory to produce ethanol would be built between 2011 and 2015 as, he said, the necessary technology would only reach the required level for commercial purposes in 2015.
Ethanol production from cellulose has been studied by several companies around the world and the process make sit possible to produce fuel from biomass, including several types of vegetable.
In the Brazilian case, ethanol could be distilled from sugar cane bagasse, which would make it possible for production to increase without the need for more plantations.
As well as sugar cane, Petrobras is studying the possibility of using other materials containing cellulose biomass, including some types of wood. (macauhub)
