Angola’s Chicapa hydroelectric dam in operation in May   [ 2007-01-09 ]


Saurimo, Angola, 9 Jan – The first turbine of the Chicapa hydroelectric dam, located in the Angolan province of Lunda Sul, is due to go online in May, the provincial Eneregy and Water director, Júnior Tito said in Saurimo.

Speaking to journalists, Tito said that the project aimed to supply electricity to the Catoca mine and the city of Saurimo, the provincial capital, and added that this month the reconstruction of the city’s electricity supply network would begin.

The first turbine will generate 4 megawatts of power and 16 when it is concluded, with 4 megawatts used to supply the city and the remaining 12 to supply the Catoca mining project.

The dam will have a hydroelectric plant made up of four turbines with a 4-megawatt capacity each and will be supported by two open air sub-stations, of 20 and 15 kilovolts, one of which will be in Saurimo and the other at Catoca.

The project, which is being built by Russian construction company Alrosa Vneshtroy LDA, is 100 percent financed by Alrosa.

The Hidrochicapa consortium has as its shareholders Angolan state electricity company ENE, with 45 percent, and diamond company Alrosa, with 55 percent, and a concession period of 40 years. (macauhub)
