Brazil’s Peixe Angical hydroelectric dam starts operating November 27   [ 2006-11-21 ]

Brasilia, Brazil, 21 Nov - The Peixe Angical dam, located in the Brazilian state of Tocantins, will be opened on November 27, Enerpeixe, an Energias do Brasil subsidiary company, said in Brasilia.

The dam, which is a joint project of Energias do Brasil, holding company for Portugal's EDP in Brazil, with a 60 percent share, and state company Furnas Centrais Eléctricas, with 40 percent, represents an investment of some 1.6 billion reals.

Of the total investment, 670 million reals were financed by state-owned bank Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social and by a banking syndicate.

Peixe Angilical, which has a production capacity of 452 megawatts and expected annual production of 2,374 gigawatt-hours, is one of the biggest investments in the Brazilian electricity sector in the last few years.

The third and final set of generators of the dam went into use on September 16, two weeks before schedule.

Energias do Brasil also expects the fourth generator at Mascarenhas and the São João hydroelectric dam to go into operation in the second half, both of which are located in the state of Espírito Santo. (macauhub)
