Trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries totals US$53,345 million between January and May

Trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries totalled US$53,345 million between January and May of this year, rising 9.28 percent against the same period of 2013, according to official figures from China.

The figures published by Forum Macau showed that in the first five months of 2014 China sold goods to the eight Portuguese-speaking countries worth US$16.995 billion (+4.56 percent) and bought goods worth US$36.349 billion (+11.63 percent), leading o a trade deficit with the Portuguese-speaking countries of US$19.354 billion.

Trade with Brazil totalled US$34.173 billion (+8.58 percent) in the period, of which US$13.487 billion (+1.56 percent) were Chinese exports and US$20.686 billion were Brazilian exports to China.

The second-biggest trading partner for China amongst the countries was Angola, with total trade of US$16.491 billion (+8.46 percent), with Chinese sales to Angola of US$1.71 billion (+10.39 percent) and Angolan exports to China – mainly oil – worth US$14.781 billion (+8.24 percent).

Portugal came in a distant third place with two-way trade of US$1.896 billion (+25.71 percent). In the period China sold goods to Portugal worth US$1.232 billion whilst Portugal sold goods to China worth US$663 million (+20.42 percent).

Mozambique was ranked fourth in terms of trade with China with a total of US$717 million (+22.62 percent), with Mozambique selling goods worth US$199 million (+28.36 percent) and buying goods worth US$517 million (+20.54 percent).

The remaining Portuguese-speaking countries – Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea Bissau, Timor-Leste (East Timor) and Sao Tome and Principe – posted total trade with China of US$66 million in the first five months of the year. (macauhub/CN/AO/BR/CV/GW/MZ/PT/TL/ST)
