Luanda, Angola, 16 Feb – Information will be gathered for Angola’s General Census of Population and Housing in July and August 2013 and should record about 21 million people, the director-general of the National Statistics Institute (INE) stated in Luanda.
Camilo Ceita, who also coordinates the Central Census Office, added in his Wednesday comments that the INE was benefiting from international financial assistance provided by the United Nationals Population Fund (UNFPA) and World Bank to help prepare the upcoming census and associated mapping project.
Besides the INE’s central and provincial apparatus, the census will also involve partnerships with central and local public institutions to update maps, help identify people and provide logistical support and local supervision and management, Ceita said.
Updating the country’s census maps will be done taking into account the new administrative division of the national capital, which includes the municipalities of Luanda, Cacuaco, Cazenga, Viana, Belas, Icolo, Bengo and Kissama, he explained.
Ceita highlighted the fact that the Angolan government is one of the few in Africa that has assumed 100 percent of the costs of carrying out the census. But he also acknowledged the international aid received by the INE, specifically technical assistance covering management of the programme, mapping, manuals, the pilot census and data processing.
