Luanda, Angola, 28 Dec – Angola produced 50,000 sacks of Robusta coffee in the 2011 coffee harvest representing 3,000 tons of coffee, according to the International Coffee Organisation cited by weekly newspaper Expansão.
The newspaper said that production in 2011 exceeded the 2010 harvest, which totalled 35,000 sacks and represented a rise of 42.8 percent.
Since 2006 coffee production has exceeded 30,000 sacks, with the exception of 2009, when production fell to just 13,000 sacks.
The director of the National Coffee Institute, which is part of the Agriculture Ministry recently told the Expansão newspaper that Angola needed investment of at least US$150 million in coffee production, which would make it possible to produce 60,000 tons of coffee per year for export.
Figures show that in the period between October 2009 and October 2010, Angola was the sixth biggest exporter of Robusta coffee in Africa after the Ivory –coast, Guinea Conakry, Togo, Madagascar and the Central African Republic. (macauhub)
