Maputo, Mozambique, 28 Dec – Mozambique’s Prime Minister, Aires Ali has asked Mozambique’s young farmers to increase food production by learning about new agricultural technologies from Chinese specialists.
According to Mozambican newspaper Diário de Moçambique, Ali was speaking during a visit to the Lower Limpopo irrigation system, in Gaza province, where for the last two years Chinese technicians from Hubei province have been working in the area of Ponela to develop new techniques for rice production.
Since new methods of rice planting were introduced rice yield have increased from 3 to 10 tons of rice per hectare.
Aires Ali said that agricultural engineers and other specialists were due to visit Ponela to find out about the new technologies and implement them in other provinces of Mozambique.
The Ponela area has around 11,000 hectares of arable land, of which 7,000 hectares are in the hands of farmers and 4,000 hectares are split amongst 8,000 small artisanal producers. (macauhub)
