Angola’s port of Lobito handles over 2 million tons of cargo in 2011

Lobito, Angola, 28 Dec – The commercial port of Lobito, in Angola, between January and 24 December of this year handled over 2.7 million tons of cargo, as compared to 1.3 million in 2010, the chairman of the port’s board of directors, Anapaz de Jesus Neto said.

According to Neto in the period the port handled 87,538 containers, or 9,638 more than in 2010.

The port, according to the chairman, saw 699 ships anchor in the period, which was one ship fewer than in 2010. In the same period 1,264 vehicles were unloaded or 4,751 fewer than in 2010.

Anapaz de Jesus Neto said that the new measures implemented at the port allowed for each ship that anchored there to stay for just two days at the port.

The chairman of the board of the port of Lobito also said that in 2011 important steps had been taken in the projects to build the dry dock, a loading and unloading terminal, expansion of the quay and paving the port facility, all of which are estimated to cost US$195 million. (macauhub)
