China maintains in April position as Brazil’s main commercial partner

Brasilia, Brazil, 4 May – Official figures released in Brasilia indicate that China, which overtook the United States as Brazil’s main commercial partner in 2009, maintained that top position from January through April of this year.

The April figures released Monday by the Ministry for Development, Industry and External Trade show that in the first four months of the year China imported US$7.2 billion of Brazilian products, while the USA imported US$5.9 billion.

Just in Brazil, China purchased goods worth US$2.5 billion, while the figure for the USA was US$1.6 billion.

External Trade Secretary Welber Barral said when presenting the figures that China should most likely remain Brazil’s top commercial partner, especially since higher iron ore prices will help China keep the leading position it attained last year.

From January to April Brazilian exports reached US$54.39 billion, a record for the period, while imports stood at US$52.21 billion.

Besides China, the other major buyers of Brazilian products were the United States, Argentina, the Netherlands and Germany, while Brazil’s main suppliers were the United States, China, Argentina, Germany and Nigeria. (macauhub)
